Notes: A fun show at the Riv with good performances and quality sound, but not our most populous show there by a long shot.... Concentrating on filling larger venues with all-ages fans for the past two years has apparently thinned out our 19+ crowd a bit. Gah. You can't have your cake and eat it too, I guess. Regardless, the room was full of happy 'Gotephiles (including a hefty chunk of young'uns who scammed or snuck their way past security) there to see the band at a top-notch venue and the night did not disappoint.
Soundman Ron, familiar with the room, was able to deliver a consistently great mix and maintain it easily over the course of the show. All elements clear and crisp, nice tones from the guitars especially during the acoustic mini-set.

Oh, did I mention the acoustic mini-set? A very nice surprise touch by the band, this was a three-song featurette inserted mid-show that gave us broken-down versions of Camouflage (with a nice alternate ending), Silver Gypsy (always a pleasure), and Sting (which featured Brian and Shlag both working the percussion rack for extra pizzazz and some sharp flamenco guitar from Ovakim.) Definitely a welcome twist to the set and a chance for Jer and Amir to lay down particularly solid vocals with sweet harmonies.

The electric majority of the set came across very solidly as well, just song after song of seasoned funkiness. Zygote's recent prep work for their upcoming studio effort is becoming very clear, as aside from their acoustic set this was a very straightforward show without much planned tinkering. (There was a lot of UNplanned tinkering though... more deviation from standard lyrics in this show then we've seen in a while, I'm pretty sure that the "Our brothers...sweet mothers" line in Moot was replaced by "Our drummer's.... retarded"). Lots of high points, mostly in the newer songs which have been receiving the most rehearsal attention. I Did It For You was once again very noteworthy, and Girl Next Door snapped the show up a level with that machinegun timbale finale. Tons of fun, we got a lot of good video footage but the audio recording messed up and is probably unusable... we'll mess around with it a bit and see if it can be made to sound decent.

For now I think we're going to see a break in gigs... studio work starts soon and that usually means a brief hiatus from the stage. We'll be back soon with something special for you guys, you'll see.
