The Haunt in Ithaca, NY

[hauntposterweb.jpg]
Additional Acts: Liquid Logic, Blind Identity
Ticket Price: $5 at the door
Set List: GreenRoot / Kousharee / Swimming In Chlorine / Nejuan / Gratefully Nowhere / Two Tales / Static / Weather
Set Length: 40 minutes, from 7:45 to 8:25pm
Rough Attendance: About 25, mostly made up of members of other bands and bar staff
Caught on tape? Nope. No tape deck. No surprise there.
Poster: Recut version of samurai poster for 17/11/2k Rivoli gig
Notes: Whoo boy. Jeremy said it best into the microphone about halfway through Zygote's set: "Thank you for the humbling experience." That phrase pretty much sums up our Ithacan adventure. Nobody showed up for this one. I mean nobody. Both of the other bands we played with were also from out of town, so nobody had a local draw, AND the entire show was from 6:45 - 9:30pm. For the first time in years, Zygote played to an empty room, and it kind of shook everyone up a little. It's pretty hard for the band to get into it when there's not an audience to trade energy with, and not everything went as smoothly as possible. Brian smacked a hole through his snare drum midway through the set (fixed it with duct tape) and there was consistent feedback and horrid bottom-end reverb that the soundman merely shrugged his shoulders at. Pile that onto the fact that Zygote got no sound check whatsoever and the soundman spent the first third of the set adjusting levels, and you can guess the end result.

The survey says: Not a great show.

Ahh well, what can you do. For bonus points though, the band did the best they could with the situation and maintained a good energy level throughout. Weather in particular sounded mean and crunchy like it should, and vocals were strong and harmoniously accurate for the short but powerful set.

Liquid Logic and Blind Identity, from Manhattan and Rochester respectively, both suffered the same crowdless fate as Zygote but are pretty cool bands and seem to be decent hardworking guys. We'll hopefully trade hometown shows with them in the near future.

Zygote firsts:

1) First show in the US of A
2) First hotel room trashed
3) First successful attempt to smuggle illegal substances across an international border
4) First time Brian and Shlag sleep in the same bed
5) First night spent trying to find a hint of nightlife in "downtown" Ithaca
6) First all-you-can-eat chinese buffet that none of us can ever show our faces at again (don't ask)
7) First time "Biz" was not played at a Zygote show since it was first introduced. (It was on the setlist originally but skipped when it became apparent that we were stretching our allotted time limit.)

On a whole, the experience was fantastic. We got our taste of touring ( a little taste, but a taste nonetheless) and we LIKE it. Plans are underway to do much more of the same, so expect Zygote's reach to start spreading further and further. Also we managed to spend multiple hours in a van together without anyone murdering anyone else, we didn't get lost (for too long) on the way, and the whole event was just FUN. We'll hit the road again soon.....
