Notes: The dynamic of this show was VERY odd, and we were a bit wary from the moment we loaded our gear in. The night itself seemed to be split into two separate events. The first half consisted of two bands (Ember SwiftandThe Erin Smith Band)whose fan bases (and I'm not even going to pretend to be delicate here) were largely lesbian. Once they were done, the room all but emptied out and had to refill again for Think Tank Fish and Zygote. Since the audience flow was so strange and Zygote went on so late (The lesbian bands were recording their sets for live albums, so breakdown and setup were VERY time-consuming) the audience was smaller than usual and the band had their work cut out for them.

Zygote's set itself was dynamic but featured few surprises. (With the exception of a smartly delivered rendition of "Interstate Love Song" featuring some crisp harmonies from Jer and Amir.) The rest of the show was fairly textbook, with the usual level of musical excellence attained easily and maintained throughout. The only sour note was an ambitious cross-genre attempt at The Flower Song which started to disintegrate about a third of the way through and never quite got back on track. Other than that the band hammered through a (relatively) quick set of familiar tunes that did the trick. A good show which exceeded our expectations.

SOUND GEEK SECTION

The sound levels were decent, with a nice sharp thwack to Brian's snare drum which punctuated the rhythms nicely. Vocals were well-mixed and Rivoli sound man Ron nailed the reverb loop on S.I.C. perfectly. I thought the bass sounded a bit boomy but it cleared up as you approached the front of the room. Aaron's and Jer's guitars were blended well, with Aaron popping in front of the mix as planned for certain sections, although I did catch some unwanted feedback near the end of the set that was quickly muffled.

I'm sorry to report that the photos we took of this show were completely unusable. Maybe I should learn how to use the "flash" that they've installed on these new-fangled cameras. What an age we live in....

FAN COMMENTS

The show was damn good. And that chord thing that Amir did during The Flower Song acted harmoniously. I thought Aaron was fuckin' scaling the frets faster than I could follow his hands. Brian was cracking the walls in a symphony of percussive madness! Jeremy sweats a lot and never missed a note. Shlag was makin' the overall sound of the band fluid, full, and deep, and adds a special something to the set every time. ~Zacharoo
