Club Abstract (Kitchener) with See Spot Run

Additional Acts:Counterbalance
Ticket Price: I have no idea, strangely enough
Set List: Drum Break --> C / Two Tales (broken-down version) / Camouflage / Swimming In Chlorine / Gratefully Nowhere / Nejuan / Meet Moot --> Moot with Bon Jovi's "Living On A Prayer" tease / GreenRoot
Set Length: 40 minutes from 11:20 to midnight
Rough Attendance: exactly 23
Caught on tape? No, and count yourself lucky.
Poster: Club-provided See Spot Run standard
Notes: Ugh. This show was so awful that I feel unclean just writing about it.

The headlining band took a two-and-a-half hour sound check, leaving us and Counterbalance the wonderful experience of checking once the doors were already open. Nothing maintains that perfect gig vibe like letting an unfamiliar audience hear a disintegrated third of your set through incorrectly mixed monitors. Woo hoo.

Exactly 8 seconds into C, Amir popped the low E string on his bass. The unpoppable string, as it's popularly known. Usually we have an extra bass on hand, but at this show we had neither an extra bass or our guitar tech. Me and Dveris (our drum tech) made quick eye contact and then spent the next several frantic minutes searching for the bassist from Counterbalance, who had (of course) made himself scarce after his band's set. Meanwhile Amir adjusted to a version of C played in a higher register, then the band swung into a guitars-only rendition of Two Tales. By this point we'd found the dude we were looking for, he graciously offered use of his bass, and the show took on some semblance of normalcy.

Shlag playing on his second-string congas. Brian on a scavenged drum kit. Amir on a borrowed bass playing through a rented cabinet. This show was a parade of hand-me-down gear, and anyone who says that gear doesn't make a difference is a naïve sumbitch.

The Bon Jovi teaser, again. Hey, it was funny last time and there wasn't a single person in the room other than band and crew who'd heard it before. Went over great, naturally. Unfamiliar audiences love a little taste of anything recognizable, no matter HOW good the original music is.

Counterbalance (cool group of laid-back guys with a post-grunge feel, we'll probably play with them again soon) drew a reasonable 50 people (laugh if you want, but that ain't bad for a Thursday night at 10 o'clock in Kitchener during the off-season), which melted to half that for Zygote's set, then utterly disappeared for See Spot Run. Ouch. We ditched See Spot Run's set for the second time in two weeks and tore ass home to either crash (those of us working stiffs who have actual day jobs) or cruise to Rol San on Spadina for some tasty Chinese treats (lucky unemployed bastards.)

Weather. Anybody notice that it was NOT on the setlist? This show marks the first time since its inception that Weather was passed over. It was included on the setlist, but we ran out of time due to the bass-string incident and had to cut it. Make a note of it in your Zygote diary.

Lots of low points about this show, but of course I'm overly critical. Even on their worst night Zygote is more than a match for any band you'd care to put them up against, and playing through all the abovementioned problems to a tiny little unfamiliar audience in a club with shaky sound STILL found people coming up to the band after their set to compliment the performance and buy albums. We were actually a bit puzzled by the response (Amir looked like he thought it was a trick of some kind) since this show was way WAY below the standard we've set for ourselves, but I suppose that if people haven't seen what the 'Gote is truly capable of then they can still be impressed with a bare-bones version of things.
