Notes: A road gig in Sudbury, which was a 4.5-hour drive through a Class 5 Kill-storm. We had to push the van out of deep snow twice. One time my fault, one time Shlag's. Not a bad little trip though. We pulled into Rafter's right on time, to learn that the opening act, who was FROM Sudbury, had bailed on the gig because of the snowstorm. Sweet. Ran a brief and unencouraging sound check, (Me: "How's the sound system in here?" Sound Man: "Oh, the sound in here sucks shit."), and peeled out for a quick bite to eat at a restaurant I'm sure we're not allowed back in. Returned to the venue to find that the crowd had swelled to a mighty 50 people. Maybe. I LOVE playing gigs during blizzards 450 kliks away from home on nights when Team Canada is playing Finland in an elimination round.

Aaaanyway, that's all the bad stuff. There is actually some good stuff, so keep reading. First, Rafter's treated us like gold. Very accomodating, very friendly, they draw a crowd who is actually there to see a band, we'd love to play there again. The sound system isn't great but their sound man (despite his appraisal of the house gear) was very responsive to my suggestions and was able to wrangle things into a tolerable state by a few songs into the set.

The show itself was actually good. Very good. It took Zygote about three songs to fully win over the entire audience, and from there it was a solid progression of funky entertaining music with tons of creativity and ad-libbing all around. Bonus points to Amir for upping the ante and really cutting loose on an impromptu non-song called "Sitting On The Couch Sipping Lemonade" which was actually made up on the spot. It featured the band roiling through rumbling atmospherics while Amir overlaid intense wailing vocals, until Jer signalled an unplanned surge into the pounding outro of Ladies. Awesome. It all came together. Even though the band had been playing well up to that point, from then on it got punched into overdrive on all counts. Every song from then on was explosive and tight, stage presence was way way up there, and a roomful of people who had never heard these songs before were completely diggin' on it. The new reggae song was great, Fast Funk was amazing, the Santeria cover got a standing ovation, and although we had planned a "lighter" set, the audience was clearly ready for the hard stuff once things got near the end, and Zygote brought out the big guns in the guise of Girl Next Door and Weather. We sold a bunch of CDs, made some new fans, and had a great time. Bad shows should always be this good.
