Notes: This wasn't actually a GIG in the proper sense of the word, but it WAS a Zygote performance so it gets a mention here. The event (from what I can piece together) was the graduate dinner and awards ceremony for the students and faculty of the Science department from U of W. Perfect. Nobody loves Zygote more than science professors. It took about twenty seconds of GreenRoot before the more "mature" members of the audience hightailed it out of there. After that, things settled into a surreal wedding-band atmosphere, with chemistry students in suits and gowns staring blankly over the remains of their roast beef and clapping politely between songs. (I'm exaggerating a bit. There was actually an enthusiastic group of students that was cheering and grooving appropriately on the sidelines, plus a throng of our friends up on the balcony added their rowdiness to the mix.)
All in all the band played a pretty good set with nice energy considering the situation. I found myself caught up in an ongoing battle with the Event Committee over whether the volume should be turned up or down, (I thought up, they preferred down) but generally the sound in the room was clear and punchy. Great staff at Federation Hall, by the way, they treated us very nicely all night.
High points of the set include a perfect version of C (that's the newly-named "funk tune" you've heard at recent shows) that showcased some new arrangements, a super-crunchy, high-energy rendition of Weather, and vocal harmonies in general, which were locked into position all night long. Special kudos to Amir for making sure that every obscenity and curseword in every song was clearly enunciated and audible to the faculty members cringing at the back of the room.
