Notes: This one was a bit strange, but still good. Openers Left Pencey brought a bunch of friends and family members to watch them play... the average age in there was about 40 until their set ended and all the mommies and daddies went home.... basically we did NOT get along with Left Pencey. Nothing specific really, we just rubbed each other the wrong way. Hate at first sight.

Inter-band squabbles notwithstanding, the 'Gote put on an energetic show with lots of new material and your typical Hudson hijinks. Normally at the Hudson we do a 2-set plan with a 20-minute break, but Left Pencey started late and pushed us back to the point where we had to condense the two sets into a single long one. Did I say lots of new material? Of the 18-song setlist, only 9 of them have been recorded by Zygote before. Songs like Fast Funk, Girl Next Door and Little Ditty are quickly becoming familiar setlist staples, and even newer tracks like Father and I Did It For You (formerly listed as "New Reggae Tune" in these reviews), are winning immediate favour with our audience. I Did It For You in particular has single written all over it, with its laid-back intro, heavy-reggae hook, unique vocal patterns, and energetic finale.

The band performed well but a bit sluggishly at first, working hard but only really starting to pick things up several songs in once the audience got up and moving in front of the stage. Zygote's energy-trade with the crowd was very apparent here in the Hudson tonight. As soon as people pushed back their chairs and started to groove, the band got an obvious boost and relaxed into typical Hudson form. A huge success was tonight's renditon of Static, a Gyge's Ring throwback that still resonates with quirky attitude and that killer "banjo" riff. (which has been very slightly modified by Ovakim with a crunchy little guitar stutter - I wouldn't be surprised if I am the only person in the whole world who has noticed it....)

The Santeria cover was trotted out again, I'm a fan of the song but I'd really like to see Jer learn all the words to it.... Plus the "Sipping Lemonade" trick from last week's Sudbury show was attempted again as a preamble to Weather but never really got interesting and sort of oozed into the main song...

Overall a good show, not our best at the Hudson by far but still a worthy outing. As the night progressed the show got better and better, the band started having a good time with it, and the audience was in full rump-shakin' mode by mid-set. Thanks to everyone who made the drive out to shake their rumps, we'll see you again real soon.
