Notes: This show was fun and a bit unusual due to the set break, which Zygote has only ever done once before. (Apr 16/98) Lots of our friends and fans from Hamilton came out to see the show, and an impressive armada of vehicles made the drive out from Toronto.
Despite the small stage and minimalist sound system, Zygote managed to crank out two impressive sets of energetic tunes, and at several points in the night the floor was literally shaking so hard that unattended beers were tumbling off tables near the stage. During the impromptu They Don't Know jam that ended off the first set, Amir invited me up on stage to trade vocals with Jeremy. I'm pretty sure that I muffed the entire thing, but people tell me that I did alright, so I'll take their word for it.
Both sets felt rather loose and informal, with a "jammy" overtone. Due to the lack of stagelights the band could see the entire room and honestly gauge audience response, so there was a lot of chitchat and general goofing around. A fun night with an interesting flow to it.
The high points of the evening:
Shlag stepping to the front of the stage with his Djembe for the outro to Biz. Amir contorted his vocal mike so it would pick up Shlag's drumming, and for the first time the audience got a proper taste of the thundering counterpoint that Shlag fills that space with.
The debut of a brand new and FUNKY original which won instant audience favour via its head-turning intro and elastic groove. This one should find its way into the catalog of Zygote favourites very quickly. It doesn't have a name yet, but I guarantee you'll recognize it as Zygote's old-school-funkiest offering.
After the gig we peeled out of town in our moderate caravan of vehicles and hunkered down in what are apparently Ancaster's worst lodgings, the Motel Maple Farms. Evil-looking proprietors the Patel Brothers were WAY too suspicious of our intentions at 3:30am and insisted on complete credit checks and head counts. Three rooms with no heating system to speak of, a dead mouse lodged in the overhead lamp and mysteriously cloudy tap water. On checkout the next morning, they actually counted BLANKETS before they would let us leave. Are you kidding me? BLANKETS? Wow dudes, chill out a bit.
SOUND GEEK SECTION
Not much to say here. The Hudson is small enough that the boys were basically playing through their amps and the drum kit wasn't miked. Levels were good throughout the night (I thought the first set had more snap than the second) and both vocals rode high in the mix as per Zygote standard.
I took some pictures at the show and the London show (see next review) using my old 35mm. Maybe this time they'll turn out alright, but I doubt it. Either I'm seriously brain-damaged or my camera ain't quite right. Either way I should look into it soon. When they're developed I'll post the pics here.
