The Rivoli

[2G2T1N.jpg]
Additional Acts: Soundtrack, Odin Red
Ticket Price:$5 at the door
Set List: uncertain.
Set Length: 1 hour, 20 minutes, from 12:20 - 1:40
Rough Attendance: 250, a full house
Caught on tape? yes, it's in Josh's library
Poster: Variant of crow poster used for both shows this date. "Two Gigs, Two Towns, One Night" laminated passes!
Notes: This was the show that the night was really leading up to. Once the band hit the stage here, all the worries of the night up to that point (see other April 21st 2000 review) disappeared, and the band was once again in familiar territory. From the opening slide of Swimming In Chlorine, the band was tight, focused, and responsive to each other and the crowd. And the CROWD. In great spirits tonight, freaking to the heavy parts, grooving to the rest, and singing every goddamn word. The room was full when Zygote got on stage, and full when they got off.

Despite a problem with Aaron's solos being muffled, the sound was pretty damn good, particulary the vocal mix. Harmonies were very nearly perfect, points taken off for a dreadful chorus during Gratefully Nowhere that was flatter than Wile E. Coyote after a date with an anvil. A great set overall, sprinkled with treats and delivered with power and style. The end of the evening found the band wandering around the club shell-shocked from the evening's events and slightly dibelieving that the whole thing went off so seamlessly. Two Gigs, Two Towns, One Night. Hell of a feat.

High points: A very cool interlude during "Kousharee" that had a nifty wind-up-music-box feel to it, the moment during "Static" when the band swung back into the song from the "Master of Puppets" tease, a nifty reggae twist to The Flower Song, and a roomful of people singing Happy Birthday to Amir with Aaron attempting to follow along on guitar (The guy's a wizard but he can't play Happy Birthday. Go figure.)

FAN COMMENTS

"Last night was what Zygote was all about. The more I think about it, the higher and higher on the best shows of all time list it gets. This show was top three Zygote show material. We're going to be talking about this one for a long time. Even when we're eighty and in a retirement home. We'll be sitting there and say "You remember the time Zygote did those two shows in two towns in one night?"... The only thing that brought the show down was THE ROOKIES AT THE FRONT WHO TRIED TO PUSH ME OUT OF MY FRONT ROW SPOT! GIMME A BREAK!! I'M GLAD YOU GUYS LOVE THE 'GOTE BUT YOU HAVE TO EARN THE RIGHT TO STAND UP FRONT!" - Lee K.

"Sickest Show!" - Brian A.
